Create an account
YouTube channels are tied to a Google Account. You can create a personal channel or a Brand Account that multiple managers can access — Brand Accounts are strongly preferred for businesses and creator teams.
- Sign in at youtube.com and create or choose a channel.
- Confirm phone verification if prompted before uploading.
- Customize channel name, art, and default upload settings in YouTube Studio.
- For teams, use a Brand Account and invite managers with the minimum roles needed.
Decide early whether content is “made for kids” under COPPA-related settings — this choice affects comments, notifications, and monetization features. Getting it wrong can create policy problems later.
Channel names should be searchable and durable. Avoid year-based names that will look dated. If you operate multiple shows, Brand Accounts and clear naming conventions keep permissions tidy.
Set default metadata templates in Studio (description blocks, upload defaults) so every upload starts from a compliant baseline, including the audience setting.
Privacy basics
- Default upload visibility: Public, Unlisted, or Private
- Per-video visibility overrides for premieres and drafts
- Playlist privacy controls
- Who can see subscriptions and saved playlists on your Google Account
- Comment moderation, blocked words, and held-for-review settings in Studio
Unlisted links can still spread if shared widely. Private is the right choice for family archives and unfinished drafts. Review channel manager invitations carefully — a malicious manager is a serious risk.
Unlisted launch links are convenient for clients reviewing drafts — until the link leaks. Use Private for true confidential review and invite specific Google accounts when needed.
Comment settings can be tightened during controversy or opened when community discussion is part of the value. Held-for-review queues need staffing; do not enable volume you cannot moderate.
Security and two-factor authentication
Secure the underlying Google Account with 2-Step Verification and a unique password. YouTube channel theft usually starts with Google Account takeover or a malicious manager invite.
- Enable 2-Step Verification on your Google Account; prefer security keys or authenticator prompts.
- Review Google Account → Security → Your devices and third-party access.
- Audit YouTube Studio → Settings → Permissions regularly.
- Use advanced protection features if you are a high-risk public figure and eligible.
Phishing emails faking Copyright strikes are common. Always open Studio from a bookmark, not from the email button, when something feels off. Confirm strike details inside Studio.
Create content
Upload long-form video or Shorts through Studio or the app. Titles, thumbnails, descriptions, chapters, and end screens are part of the product — treat them as content, not afterthoughts.
- Write titles that match what the video truly delivers.
- Design thumbnails that remain readable on mobile.
- Add chapters for longer videos to improve navigation.
- Use playlists to turn one-off uploads into series.
- Schedule premieres when live chat community matters for a launch.
If you pursue YouTube Partner Program monetization, read current eligibility and Creator Music / copyright rules before you rely on revenue. Copyright claims and Community Guidelines strikes follow different processes — learn which inbox notice you received.
Reusable formats — explainers, field tests, interviews — help viewers know what to expect. Publish on a cadence you can keep for a quarter. Erratic bursts followed by silence make it hard to build habit.
Shorts can funnel into long-form with end screens and spoken invitations. Make sure the long-form actually delivers the promise teased in the Short.
Thumbnails should be honest. Misleading packaging may spike clicks and then crush retention, teaching the system not to recommend you.
Description blocks should include chapters, resources, and disclosures. First lines matter because they appear in search snippets and truncated mobile views. Put the clearest summary first, then links.
Collaboration videos introduce your channel to overlapping audiences when both creators serve similar problems. Agree on publishing dates, thumbnail styles, and how affiliate disclosures will appear before recording.
Live streams require moderation staffing. If you cannot moderate, prefer premieres or recorded Q&A formats. Unmoderated lives can derail quickly and create policy risk.
Accessibility is growth-friendly: accurate captions help viewers in quiet offices and non-native speakers. Auto-captions are a start; correct proper nouns and technical terms.
When algorithms shift, channels with loyal playlists and email lists weather changes better than channels dependent on a single viral Short. Build owned audience relationships in parallel.
Delete a post
- Open YouTube Studio → Content.
- Open the video’s options menu.
- Choose Delete forever, or set Private/Unlisted if you only need to hide it.
Delete forever is difficult or impossible to reverse. Prefer Private while you decide. Download the video from Studio if you need a copy and no longer have the master file.
Before deleting, consider Private if the video has backlinks or course references. Update descriptions on related videos if you remove a part of a series.
Archive or hide posts
Private and Unlisted states are your primary “archive” tools. Google Takeout can export YouTube-related data. Keep an offline media library with clear filenames — platform storage is not a backup strategy for a professional channel.
Maintain an external archive with project folders: raw, edit, thumbnails, captions. Label video IDs in your spreadsheet so Studio and disk stay aligned.
Download your data
Use Google Takeout for account data exports and Studio download options for specific videos when available. Brand Accounts should clarify who owns the Takeout and where files are stored.
Google Takeout plus Studio downloads cover different needs. Takeout is account-oriented; Studio helps retrieve specific assets. Enterprise teams should define who may run Takeout.
Deactivate vs delete your account
You can delete a channel without deleting your entire Google Account. Deleting the Google Account removes Gmail and other services too — read every warning screen.
- Transfer or remove videos you want to keep elsewhere.
- Remove managers and linked ad accounts as needed.
- YouTube Studio advanced settings → Delete channel (confirm current path in Help).
- If closing Google entirely, use Google Account deletion flows separately and intentionally.
Deleting a channel removes public videos and can break embeds across the web. Communicate with collaborators and update websites that embed those players before deletion day.
Grow followers ethically
Audience retention, clear packaging (title/thumbnail), and consistent publishing drive growth more reliably than sub-for-sub schemes. Shorts can introduce new viewers; long-form builds deeper relationships when topics deserve depth.
- Study retention graphs to fix weak openings
- Ask for meaningful actions (subscribe after value, not before)
- Collaborate with channels in adjacent niches
- Avoid fake subs, fake views, and misleading thumbnails that violate policies
Topic clusters outperform random uploads: each video supports a playlist narrative. Community posts (when available) can bridge gaps between uploads without lowering production standards for long-form.
Evergreen tutorials can earn traffic for years when titles match durable search demand. Update them when UI screenshots age out of accuracy — outdated tutorials generate distrust and support questions. A quarterly “refresh or retire” review keeps the library honest.
Members-only or paid community features, when you use them, need clear expectations about what supporters receive. Overpromising perks is a fast way to damage goodwill.
- Post consistently about topics your audience cares about
- Reply to comments and messages thoughtfully
- Use clear captions and relevant hashtags or keywords (without stuffing)
- Avoid fake engagement services, bots, or purchased followers
- Follow each platform’s community guidelines and advertising rules
Common problems (locked, hacked, recovery)
- Copyright / Content ID — review Studio Copyright; dispute only when you have a valid basis.
- Community Guidelines strikes — read the email; appeal if warranted; do not reupload violative content.
- Hijacked channel — recover Google Account first, then remove bad managers and enable stronger 2SV.
- Monetization holds — check policy issues in YPP dashboards rather than random third-party “fixers.”
If a manager goes rogue, remove permissions immediately and rotate Google passwords. Document ownership with your business records so recovery is easier if Google asks for verification.
